Woodrow A. Mercier
November 25, 1918
March 12, 2010 |
CAPE ELIZABETH - Woodrow A. Mercier, 92, died on Friday, March 12, 2010 at the home of his daughter Ann Beaumont in Cape Elizabeth. Born in Rumford, Maine on November 25, 1918, he was the son of Solomon and Geneva (McLeod) Mercier. He graduated from Stephens High School, Farmington Normal School, and earned his Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University. In 1943, Woody married Sylvia Poulin. They were married for fifty-two years and together raised three daughters. |
|
Woody was a Mainer all his life, and an educator for over thirty-five years. His first position was a high school history teacher in East Millinocket. He then accepted principalships in Thomaston, and then Rumford. In the mid-1950’s, Woody was selected Dixfield’s Superintendent of Schools, and then returned to East Millinocket as school superintendent until he retired in 1975. He remained involved in education for three additional years as a liaison between the Maine State Department of Education and the Maine Legislature. |
|
An avid reader, Woody also enjoyed playing cards (especially duplicate bridge), watching sports events (he had a competitive nature), listening to the Big Band sounds and piano instrumentals, watching his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in all their activities, spending time at his camp in Weld, and good food (especially the family clam and lobster feeds at camp). |
|
A well-respected man, Woody exemplified commitment, dedication, determination, optimism, spirit, and a thoughtful, loving nature. Any person who sought his advice (and there were many over the years) could depend on his thorough consideration, understanding, common sense, and remarkable objectivity. He was a man who lived his life fully and taught others by his words, actions, and examples to be true to your word, fair, and honest. |
|
Woody will be deeply missed by his three daughters and their husbands: Sheila and Tom Wheeler of Weld, Donna and Ozzie Swett of Sun City Center, FL, and Ann and Don Beaumont of Cape Elizabeth; his seven grandchildren, Laura Pearce, Lynne Wheeler, Marie Kendrick, Todd Wheeler, Ann Litz, and Ryan and Danielle Beaumont; as well as his nine great-grandchildren. |
|
The family expresses a special thank-you to all of his thoughtful, caring friends and staff members at Andrews House and Market Square in South Paris. The family also extends gratitude to the medical professionals of Hospice of Southern Maine, especially Kristen and Ruth, for their comforting assistance with his care. |
|
Woody’s request for only a private family celebration of his life will be honored. Arrangements respectfully handled by the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. |

Elena Hersey
February 14, 2010 |
PORTLAND - Elena Hersey, 84, formerly of the Eastern Promenade went peacefully to sleep
in the arms of angels on Saturday Feb 13th at St Josephs Manor. She is
delighted to join her loving husband Everett for Valentine's Day. She fought
the good fight gallantly for years and now will reap the rewards of this
earthy life in her new position in heaven. Born and brought up in Portland, Elena was the daughter of
Loretto and Beatrice Piacitelli. She was born in the front room of her parents Newbury
St. home. She was the eighth child of nine. |
|
Elena started school at an early age and it was there that she quickly
developed a love of reading and learning which continued throughout her
life. She was a avid learner and loved to be informed about interesting
things and to Elena everything and everybody was interesting. Elena loved
school, she was proud of the fact that she had only missed one day of school
in 12 yrs. This was because she couldn't find her coat. Her teacher didn't
believe her and Elena was too shy to tell her that in a house of 9 children
and limited closet space things easily got lost. She never missed another
day. |
|
It was after her husband died at an early age that Elena joined the work
force. She held employment that was close by that allowed her to be home
with her children when needed. It was during these days that Elena worked
at school cafeteria's most notably Cathedral Grammar School. It was there
with her close friend Phyllis Murphy that she learned about volume cooking.
Her next job was cooking for the St Dominic's Rectory for the staff of
clergy, nuns. She stayed for 8 years. Elena then went to work at the
Cathedral Rectory and was "in charge" of the kitchen. After 7 years she
retired but continued to fill in occasionally. It was here in these places
that she developed a sincere respect and appreciation of the priests and
nuns of the community. |
|
Elena loved to cook and would make trips to young friends houses to teach
and help them make some of her specialties like Eggplant Parmigiana, or
Italian & wine cookies, pitzelles, biscotti. She also loved to share her
own cooking and her knowledge of cooking with other. |
|
When Elena's health failed she eventually had to move from her greatly loved
Eastern Prom apartment to St Joseph's Manor. The transition was a bit rough
at first but as always Elena adapted quite nicely and in no time was roaming
the halls in her wheelchair. Ms Social butterfly. It was here that she
became reacquainted with many people and met new friends among the residents
and staff. It was also here that Elena won 3 Blue Ribbons from the
Cumberland County Fair when she had some of her famous crocheted hanging
towels, cotton dishcloths and scrubbies entered. She eagerly told us about
them but downplayed her own accomplishment to instead brag about her friends
that also won prizes. |
|
Elena was many things to many people, a loving, supportive mother &
grandmother, a devoted sister a loyal generous friend, and not to mention a
spirited "Aunt Elena" to many nieces, nephews and friends. |
|
Her endearing qualities are numerous but the most recognizable was her humor
and gregarious nature. She had a gleam in her eye and a truly loving
spirit. She loved to laugh and to make people laugh and she accomplished
this with ease. She loved to talk, she loved to listen and to learn.. She
was an ordinary lady with an extraordinary heart. |
|
Many people placed Elena in their hearts because she gave so generously of
her own. Elena spent much of her time knitting, crocheting and reading. She spent
hours making towels and scarves and nylon scrubbies for the St Joseph's
Manor Christmas fair every year and this year donated several scarves to the
homeless shelter. She found extreme joy in presenting her creations to her
many friends and family. |
|
Besides her husband, Everett, Elena was predeceased by a sister, Pasqualina
"Pat" Grimaldi, and three brothers, Martin, Tony, and Johnny Piacitelli. She is survived by her children,
daughter Christine A. Hersey and her partner Irene Dufour of Portland, and son Michael J. Hersey and his
wife Martha of Casco; four sisters, Philomena "Mae" Carlista of Portland, Rose
"Roxie" Piacitelli and Mary Grimaldi, both of South Portland, and Yolanda
Hunter and her husband Lawrence of Millinocket; and one granddaughter, Traci
Crouanas and her husband Kevin of Windham. |
|
Elena will be missed greatly but her love and the sound of her laughter will
be forever with us. |
|
Visiting hours will be 4:00 to 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 17th at the
Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will
be recited at 9:15am on Thursday, February 18th at the funeral home, followed
by a 10:00am Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate
Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Interment will be in Calvary
Cemetery, South Portland. |
