Sherry L. Sabo
September 21, 1950
May 28, 2010 |
SCARBOROUGH - Sherry L. Sabo of Scarborough, passed away Friday, May 28, 2010 at her home after a ten-year battle with cancer. She was born on September 21, 1950 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Ramona and Dan Hughes. She is survived by David Maxwell, her husband of almost fourteen years, a daughter, Hallie Sabo and her fiancée James Calliham, a second daughter, Chelsea Sabo, Sherry's son Taylor Sabo; her mother Ramona; sisters; Terri Scott with her husband Jeff, Marti Pippin and her husband Wayne; stepdaughters; Britany Maxwell, Bethany Maxwell and her wife Lora Rasmussen, and Elizabeth Maxwell. |
|
Sherry’s father and her stepson, David Steven, preceded her in death. |
|
Dr. Sabo received her undergraduate degree from the University of South Florida and her
graduate degrees from Georgia State University. She worked as a guidance counselor in
Browning, Montana from 1975 until 1977 at which time she became the Administrative Officer
for the Western Montana Community Mental Health Center in Missoula, Montana. In 1980 she
was named Director of Mental Health Treatment Service at Rutland Mental Health, Rutland,
Vermont. Sherry started her life’s work at Counseling Services Inc. in the 1981 as the Associate
Director. At that time, the service offerings were limited. She assumed the role of Acting
Executive Director in 1994 during a time of significant fiscal challenges. Her creativity and
tenacity did not go unnoticed by the Board, and she was later confirmed as the leader of
Counseling Services, Inc. |
|
During her first few years in this role, Sherry righted the ship on solid financial legs and turned
her attention to fill service gaps in the community. The dream she held for the organization was
to provide clients and consumers with a continuum of services that not only supported their
recovery but most importantly brought pride and joy into their lives. Her fondness for the
Agency’s social clubs, safe environments for folks to gather for support, assistance, and a bowl
of soup, was, and continues to be, a part of the legacy she leaves for us to continue to nurture.
One can speak of Sherry’s success at CSI in terms of the dollars and cents, but the CSI family
prefers to focus on the heart she so willingly shared with those who sought us out. This was
recognized by the Board upon Sherry’s retirement by the renaming of the Biddeford facility the
“Sherry Sabo Center” to honor the nearly thirty years of her untiring contributions. |
|
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a 2:00 p.m. Memorial service Wednesday June 3rd, at State Street Church, 159 State Street, Portland. Rev. Jeanette A. Good, PhD will officiate. In lieu of flowers, Sherry expressed the desire that donations be made to eHope (info@eHope.nu) P.O. Box 7794, Portland, Maine 04112, or the CSI social clubs, 265 North Street, Saco, ME 04072. Arrangements are respectfully handled by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 172 State Street, Portland. |
