After his strong performance as a route salesman, he was promoted to branch manager in Boston then the branch manager in Westbury, Long Island, New York, and the Bronx and Manhattan branches of Anheuser-Busch. |
In 1952 he was promoted to Assistant Regional Manager responsible for Anheuser-Busch branches and wholesale operations. He then became the Division Manager and was assigned to manage the entire New England territory. |
In 1960, Frank resigned from Anheuser-Busch and purchased National Distributors, Inc. in Portland, ME. The company originally operated out of a small warehouse on York Street that received and shipped beer out of the same door. Today the company employees 200 people, operates out of a 150,000 sq. ft. temperature-controlled warehouse and has a separate sales force selling beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. This year the company is celebrating its 50th year in business. |
Frank made a lasting impression on the many people he touched who were part of National Distributors over the years. Jeff Kane, President of National Distributors, said: “Frank was living proof of the American Dream. If you work hard and are determined to make a success of yourself you can succeed. He continues to be an inspiration for many people still in our business and those who have gone on to other careers.” |
In 1985, in celebration of its 25th year in business, Frank donated $50,000 for the construction of the Band Stand in Deering Oaks Park in Portland. Frank was very proud of this gift and he arranged for the Portland Symphony Orchestra to play and the Budweiser Clydesdales to be there for the dedication. |
Having received a football scholarship, he never forgot how important a helping hand can be. This inspired Frank to be very generous to the community. He was the local sponsor of the Annual Holy Cross Book Award which was presented to a student at Catherine McAuley High School to encourage attendance at Holy Cross College. In 1985 he initiated an awards dinner for outstanding student athletes selected by Class A Coaches. This program was later taken over by the Maine Sports Hall of Fame. From 1992 thru 1996 he arranged for the South Portland Football Teams to receive Championship Rings as a memento for their accomplishments. In 1993 he established an annual $1000 scholarship to be awarded to an outstanding scholar-athlete from Waltham (MA )High School. |
In 1996 Frank was a guest of honor at a celebration held to commemorate his 50 years in the beer business. He received a special commendation from Anheuser-Busch as well as recognition from friends and co-workers. |
In 2000, Frank donated funds that the Portland Police Department used to purchase a mobile, high-tech Intoxilyzer. Michael Chitwood, then the city's police chief, praised him for his "wise approach to the responsible use of alcohol." |
Frank was a member of the Portland Lions Club, H.T. Andrews Post, Portland Elks Club, The Cumberland Club, the Italian Heritage Club as well as the Holy Cross Alumni Association and the Holy Cross President’s Council. |
He is remembered by many for his weekly columns “I Bet You Didn’t Know” which appeared in the Portland newspapers for over 25 years. The columns featured sports trivia and promoted different beer brands and facts about brewing, drinking, and enjoying beer. |

Vincent C. Sullivan
January 14, 2010
PORTLAND - Vincent C. Sullivan, age 84, beloved husband of Patricia Moore for 56 years, and loving father of Marypat McGrath, John Sullivan, and Molly Sullivan, died early Thursday morning, the 14th of January, 2010, in the loving and tender care of the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He will be sorely missed by his dear wife and children, his daughter-in-law Krista, his grandchildren, Emma, Tom, and Ryan, his sister Therese Crouteau, his brother Kenneth, his brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Carolyn, many nieces and nephews, and his best friends, Fiona, John, Billy, Frank, and Pete. |
Vincent was born and raised in Newport, RI, the eldest son of Daniel and Margaret (Shea) Sullivan. He graduated from DeLaSalle Academy, Newport, RI, and Manhattan College School of Engineering, Riverdale, NY, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. One of the "Greatest Generation", Vincent proudly served his country during World War II as a United States Marine, both in the Pacific Theater, and, after the war, in China. |
Vincent's professional career commenced in Boston in the late 1940's and continued for a period of over 40 years. In the early 1950's he joined the firm of Alonzo B. Reed Architects, Engineers, and Planners as a Senior Electrical Engineer. Thus began a remarkable career. Energetic, enthusiastic, and with a massive respect for his employees and clients, he ultimately assumed the position of Chairman and Treasurer. |
Upon retirement, he and Patricia enjoyed the "Best of Times"...restoring the Church of Ireland School House in Clifden, Connemara, Co. Galway, Ireland. Today, the School House is designated as an artistic and historic site of Connemara. It was a great run! And yes, 'tis true, on a clear day, you can see Connemara from Casco Bay! |
Twelve years ago, Vincent had a severe stroke, which left him with a right side paralysis. A challenge, but never a deterrent to a remarkable life. He fought bravely, with dignity, a grand legacy for his family, his friends, and his care givers. Even with the limitations due to his stroke, Vincent became a computer giant. In the tradition of the United States Marine Corp, "Never Give Up!" He will always and forever be with us. |

Allan Gilbert Powers
December 14, 1935
December 28, 2009 |
SCARBOROUGH - It is with great sadness that the family of Allan announces his passing on December 28, 2009, when he was called to his final journey. His drive and passion for life and his love of his family kept him fighting hard as he battled with cancer during the last few years of his life. |
He was born on December 14, 1935, in Durham, Maine, the son of Harry and Catherine (Borcsak) Powers. He attended school in Freeport and graduated from Freeport High in 1954. In high school, he enjoyed basketball, baseball, and playing his saxophone in the band. He graduated from Boston University in 1958 with a B.S. degree in Fine and Applied Arts. For several years, he pursued a career as a music teacher until he discovered his interest in retail management, working for several companies including Mammoth Mart, Kings, Ames, CVS, and just prior to his retirement in 2000, Rent-a-Center. He always worked hard and was quite devoted to his employees and co-workers. He had a great sense of humor and most people he met he loved to tease and make them laugh. |
At a young age, Allan discovered his passion for music, and especially enjoyed playing the tenor saxophone and having his own performing dance band for many years. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed boating and fishing, but his biggest passion was hunting. |
He especially loved carpentry and with pride built his family a house, a lakeside cottage, a garage, and kept busy doing projects around the house and yard. After retiring, he enjoyed traveling and was quite a Red Sox and Celtics fan. He also enjoyed identifying the different bird species that visited his backyard birdfeeder. |
Allan made what would prove to be his life’s best decision on August 24, 1957, when he married his high school sweetheart, Marie Michaud. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marie; his daughter Kelly Lancaster of Scarborough; his son Peter of Statesboro, GA, two grandchildren, Shawn and Meghan Lancaster of Scarborough; and one great-granddaughter, Analeigh Paz. He has one sister, Lucille Dennison of Freeport and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Harry, mother, Catherine, and brother, Albert. |
Visiting hours will be 3-6pm on Sunday, January 3, at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Audrey Rand
January 23, 1931
December 21, 2009 |
SOUTH PORTLAND – Audrey Rand, 78, of Little Diamond Island and South Portland, beloved wife of the late Theodore (Ted) T. Rand, passed away peacefully at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House on December 21, 2009 after a long and courageous journey with Alzheimer’s disease. She was surrounded by her loving family. Audrey was born in Greenville, ME on January 23, 1931, the daughter of Earl and Cordelia (Galusha) Buck. She was the youngest of eight children. Audrey graduated from Bangor High School, Class of 1949 where she excelled in academics, sports and school leadership activities. She was a member of the last graduating class of the Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1953. She has been a longtime member of the Maine Eye and Ear Alumni Association. She married the love of her life, Theodore T. (Ted) Rand and moved to Little Diamond Island where they renovated a former coast guard property into their family home. For many years, they were the only winter residents residing on Little Diamond Island from October to May. |
Together, Audrey and Ted raised five children on Little Diamond Island – Eric, Mark, Gale, Julie and Jill. In 1961, Ted and Audrey established Little Diamond Marine Service which included a marina selling gas and diesel, and a popular store. Their business was open from 6 AM to 9 PM daily from May through October and also during the winter for fishing boats. Audrey ran the store and marina with her daughters while Ted would be lobstering with his sons. Their children traveled by ferry boat to elementary school on Peaks Island and to junior high and high school in Portland. People expressed their awe on Audrey’s ability to manage this very popular and busy summer business while raising 5 children at the same time. Audrey and Ted loved jazz music and loved to dance. For many summers they would open their boathouse for a night of jazz by their good friend, Don Doane and his band, and this drew huge crowds from the islands and Greater Portland area. After the kids were grown, Audrey and Ted remained on the island as year round residents. They would travel each winter, often to see their friends, and they owned a home in Englewood, FL for several years. |
Audrey’s husband, Ted had multiple professional roles in his lifetime including civil engineering, business owner, and lobsterman. He was also well known for his involvement in local politics. Those who knew Audrey and Ted, knew they were synonymous with the islands. Ted would have been the first to tell you that he could not have done all these things successfully without Audrey’s strength and support. Her dedication to her family and her love and support formed the foundation for his success. |
Audrey lost the love of her life when Ted passed away in August 1996. Following this, she spent May through October on Little Diamond Island and the remainder of the year at their home near Willard Beach in South Portland surrounded by her family. She traveled annually, for 10 years, to Florida with her daughters and daughter in law. Audrey also traveled to Europe with friends and went to Africa on a safari with her daughter, Gale. She also worked as a caregiver for HomePartners elder care. When her own health declined and she was no longer able to live at home, Audrey moved to the South Portland Nursing Home where she was a resident prior to her transition to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. |
Audrey was known as a loving daughter, sister, wife, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, but most of all she was a wonderful mother and had the deepest love for her children. She touched the lives of all who knew her, young and old, with her heartwarming presence, her delightful personality and sense of humor and her deep caring and compassion for others. Throughout their lives, her children have constantly heard, from people of all ages, that “Your mother is so much fun!” She was like a grandmother to many of the children growing up on Little Diamond Island always remembering birthdays, holidays and graduations. Most of all, she loved to be surrounded by her family. |
Audrey leaves behind her loving children. Her son, Eric, of Portland, her son, Mark and her daughter-in law, Marion, of Portland, her daughter and son-in-law, Gale and Charlie McGee, her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and David Vickers and her daughter, Jill Rand of Westbrook. She also leaves behind her 13 beloved grandchildren and 9 beloved great grandchildren. |
Audrey’s family would like to express our sincere gratitude for the compassionate and loving care provided by HomePartners staff over the past 6 years. She loved you all. Thank you for making a difference in her life and in ours. Audrey’s family would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the South Portland Nursing Home for their loving care and for treating her as one of their own family. Also, special thanks to the staff of VNA Home Care and Hospice and, most recently, the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their loving kindness and compassion and their exceptional care and support. |

She met her husband while he was in the Air Force stationed in London, England. A year later on June 21, 1959, they were married and came to America to start their lives together. This past summer they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. |
Marie was a long time employee of the telephone company, retiring in 1997. After retiring, she and her husband spent winters in Naples, Florida and summers in Maine. |
In July of 2004, she was diagnosed with lung cancer. She faced her illness with courage, dignity and grace. Even as the end was approaching, she brought laughter to her family, friends, doctors and nurses, a trait admired by all. |
Marie had an amazing zest for life and an untouchable uniqueness to her. Whomever came in contact with her, from the very young to the very old, would leave with laughter and a story dear to their heart. Her friends were plentiful. Her legacies too numerous to mention. |
